4 Things to Remember When You're Struggling

I like to focus on the positive side of things, but let’s be real here for a second - life can be tough for everyone at times. No matter your age, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or race, we all have struggles. The unfortunate reality is that pain is inevitable. Thus, we all have our own baggage to carry. Whatever your burden may be, it is no greater than or less than anyone else’s burden. In other words, your problems are not “worse than” or “not as bad as” someone else’s problems. Yes, first world problems are problems too! Everyone’s struggles are valid and worthy of support. But how can you feel like you’re struggling less? Here are a few important viewpoints to remember when you’re carrying a burden, that can help you get through feeling a little more positively:

You’ve struggled before, and made it through. You have survived so much, and you’ve ended up stronger because of it. You’ve learned so much because of what you’ve been through, which has helped you grow so much. You are not the person you once were - you’re smarter, stronger, more resilient, more creative, and so much more. You are strong enough to make it through whatever you’re going through, because what you’ve been through has prepared you for this.

Gratitude will help you think more positively. Make a list of things and people you’re thankful for. Focus on these things, and remember that everything happens for a reason. Be thankful for the things and people you do have. Try to be grateful for your trials and tribulations, too, because they are teaching you so much (as I mentioned before). Thinking positively through a bad situation will help you feel less affected by the stress and struggle.

Progress is key. A little progress each day adds up to big results. A great way to make progress without feeling overwhelmed is to start with a few small, achievable goals and work your way up from there. Remember to be proud of yourself every step of the way, with every bit of progress you make. Baby steps forward are still steps forward, and they will eventually take you where you’re trying to go.

You are not alone. Not only do you have tons of people that love you in this world, but you’re also not the only one struggling with whatever you’re going through. You can read more about how many others are suffering from the same things you are here. One surefire way to feel less alone is to reach out to someone for support! Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength because you’re taking steps to improve your life. Remember, the best bosses in the working world don’t do it all themselves, they delegate tasks to other members of their team!
